CASSELL’S NATURAL HISTORY was published in London in 1881 before the advent of wide scale photography. The practice at that time was to have an artist on any major expedition who would draw what he saw during the day. The artist’s work would have been set as a woodcut on the return to Britain and thence to publication.
This was an era when Europe became fascinated by the world beyond its frontiers. Apart from explorers bringing home images there was a scramble to assemble exhibitions in museums and zoological gardens.
